REVIEW

Trip Report by Anna Clague

A few years ago we thought let’s go to FIJI.
(I can pinpoint the decision down to the time we were at Lake Pupuke in a hail storm, about to return to the water after a surface interval spent shivering in the car with the heaters on full, ruffling the woolly beanies firmly pulled down over goose pimpled heads.) GOOD decision.

We were a select few, but all in need of a tropical dive holiday. Now let’s just stop here and look at these points separately.

Tropical – palm trees, white sandy beaches, crystal blue water, cocktails, sunshine, WARMTH, islands, TICK

Dive – fish in abundance, hard corals, soft corals, sharks, wrecks, reefs, colour, photo ops, guided/unguided, drift, WARM tropical water TICK

Holiday – relax, read books, siesta, duty free, socializing, sundowners, suntan/burn/block, getting away from it all, TICK

Put these all into one package and you have Volivoli Beach Resort and Dive holiday.

The guys at Volivoli are a really nice kiwi family whose 1st son trained as a dive instructor in the cool waters of the South Island. After working in Kaikoura for a bit he ran away to Fiji on his OE and never left.  The family followed and set up the resort which is what they do and do well.

Volivoli is lovely and really well put together. Over the years we have been returning, the resort and its offerings have just got better and better and that was from a very good starting point.

The diving is superb. The outer reefs are lush and teeming with the full spectrum of colourful reef fish. The soft coral is absolutely stunning. Have no doubt as to why Fiji is known as the soft coral capital of the world!! I’ll let the pictures do the talking on this.

We saw reef sharks every day and friendly Turtles. The inner reefs were less soft coral and more hard coral creating a Dr Suess landscape and we had some fantastic macro dives. Popcorn shrimp beautiful gorgonian fans, anemones with resident clown fish, tropical scorpion fish and leaf fish. We also spent some time with the biggest eel that I have ever seen!!! Honestly you could have fit Andrew’s head in its mouth with room to spare, and Andrew’s got a big head!

The resort has recently discovered that they have a superb critter dive off the sandspit - seahorses, ghost pipefish, frogfish to name a few of the sort after critters you can find here.

We all certainly made the most of being on holiday. Lots of off gassing in the bar, pool and loungers on the deck out side the Bure with a sundowner (tip- read the label on the mixers as Gin and Soda is a completely different drink to Gin and Tonic, especially the first gulp!!)

After a leisurely dip in the pool to cool off after a heavy reading session (substitute siesta for reading), we would have a social evening dining and sharing tall tales in the lounge.

All in all this was a 'tropical dive holiday'.

One night on our trip to Volivoli Resort, Soni taught us some day to day Fijian terms (of the Bau dialect).
We were quizzed on these each day, not just by Soni, but by all the staff!

Yadra – Good Morning

Bula – Good Afternoon

Moce – Good Night / Good Bye

Noqu I Tau – My friend

Sa Valeacava Tiko – How Are You?

Sega Na Lega – No Worries

Wananavu – Excellent/Brilliant

Sota Tale – See you later

Kerekere – Please

Vosota – Sorry

Dua Tale – One more

Kana Vinaka – Delicious (applies to food only)

Gunu Vinaka - Delicious (applies to drink only)

Vinaka Vakalevu – Thank You Very Much

TESTIMONIALS

What a fantastic trip we had to Fiji. Amazing dives.Perfectly organised by the wonderful and fun filled Kate of GD. Volivoli Resort felt like a second home. By day 2 all the staff at the resort know your name. The dive guides are super professional and we had the same fab guide Ben for each dive. Highly recommend this trip with GD

Hi Andrew & Anna,

Thanks to you both for all the extra trouble that you two went to to make my Voli Voli trip so very enjoyable. It was just what I needed.

With special regards,
Quentin
