I was very lucky to not only get my hands on one of the first Terics to come to NZ, but the timing was perfect... I received my unit at the start of a two week trip to dive the wrecks of Truk Lagoon.
There is no denying that I am a massive fan of Shearwater, so I already had the NERD and Perdix AI with me on this trip, both amazing computers, so how was the Teric going to compare? I can say that the bottom line is. It absolutely blew me away!!
The clarity of the display is the first thing you notice. Wow!! It is so bright and so clear, Shearwater have raised the bar one more time. They have managed to make the numbers bigger than on the larger computer, yet they have kept the intuitive menu system of old, so the new model is very quickly familiar to current Shearwater users.
I noticed a couple of small, but nice features that are new to this model. The first was a simple timer that starts when you clear your deco. Previously we had a nice text message appear on the screen when deco was clear, not it says that and a seconds timer lets you know by how long have you cleared. The new compass is great - admittedly, I wasn't using a compass on the wrecks, but on some long deco stops, I was able to investigate the features of the watch. You get 2 choices of how your compass is displayed. the first is the same as the Perdix and NERD, or, you can set the bearing and North to show on the outside edge of the display whilst in all other screens!! The next new feature is the free dive mode. On our last day of our trip, we had a BBQ on a tiny island. before the meal, I took the Teric (and a scooter) and gave the free dive mode a go. I am no champion free diver, but with the aid of a scooter, did manage a dive to 20m, which it told me took 63.5 secs to complete.
The battery life was surprisingly good compared to other smart watches at around 3 days if you wear it as a watch and dive computer for 2 dives a day. The charging was very easy with the wireless charging dock. I used it as a bedside clock and charged it every two days. I plan on buying a spare charger, so I can have one at home, and one with my other dive gear like camera and dive light chargers.
I used the Teric in Closed Circuit mode during my dives, but then let Anna take it on an Open Circuit Tech dive, her feedback and response was the same as mine, except, she had changed the display colours to pink (to match her new wing).
On return to NZ, the watch got passed amongst the Global Dive Team, and has been on Open Water courses (much to the envy of the new divers), refreshers and is now over in Palau being used by legendary cameraman Steve Hathaway ( if his daughter Riley lets him take it off her wrist).
This is an incredible computer, that should suit every level of diver who wants the best. The demand worldwide has been incredible, with a sales explosion around the world. My advice is to get in quick to secure yours.
