It is no secret that the Team at Global Dive absolutely love Shearwater products. We have been actively using them since the Predator computer back in 2010. Since then we have seen the gradual evolution of products, with each model offering a small improvement over the previous generation.
The early computers were focussed on technical diving, allowing divers to access their information underwater via a large, clear colour display. The computers were powerful, the user interface was simple, and after over 10 years in the market, they have well and truly proven to be Reliable. These 3 brand assets have continued to be followed throughout.
I have dived extensively with the Perdix AI and Teric in all of their modes, including Open Circuit Recreational mode, and have really enjoyed the fact that one computer can work for all aspects of diving, from shallow single tank reef dives, through twins, side mount and 130m+ Rebreather dives. Most divers however, may not have the inclination or desire to do all of these activities, so the Peregrine is ideally placed to provide all the things we love about the other models, in a more accessible price point.
The first thing I noticed on the dive was that the Peregrine appeared to be slightly brighter and sharper than my Perdix.... hmm I thought, how could this be so, as they have the same 5.6cm LED LCD, well it appears I was correct in my obviation, as they have used a glass screen infront of the LCD, so it really is brighter and sharper.
The next thing I liked was the familiarity, as far as my dive went, a single tank dive on the HMNZS Cantebury ship wreck. I placed the computer in AIR mode, this removed the options for changing gas, just leaving a clear, simple user interface. After 20 mins on the wreck I was alerted to the screen via a vibration alert. The screen alert read "Low NDL Alert" with my NDL of 5 displayed in yellow. This was apreciated, so we started to head up to a shallow section of the wreck.
The other new aspects to the computer, compared to the popular Perdix AI are a new feature called "Rate", this gives you your accent and descent speeds in m/min on the display - a very useful feature indeed.
Next was the ability to set a max depth alert, and time alert. The good thing is these are all optional, so you can turn them on or off as you wish.
We often see divers after a dive, struggle to find their log for the divemaster, this has been solved by adding a simple information screen one button press away from the home screen, with Last dive depth and dive duration.
Overall, I was very impressed with this new computer. In fact I am amazed at how good it is at this price point. It fits perfectly in the Shearwater range. If you need Air integration, Trimix or Rebreather functions, the Perdix, Teric and NERD will suit you, otherwise this is a killer of a deal, we just feel sorry for the competition, who for 10 years have slowly seen their market share slip away.
