Northland Whites Reef
DESCRIPTION
Never a disappointing dive here!
White Reef - when looking down into the water it is clear where it gets its name. Below the surface are white rocky outcrops covered in all sorts of life including kelp forests that gently sway in the current.
You can see hundreds of fish in a vast variety: monstrous-sized Snapper, curious Kelpfish, Red Moki, Red Pigfish, photobombing Sandangers Wrasse, Leatherjackets, Demoiselles, Moray Eels, Porcupinefish, Sweep, Mado, Goatfish, Kingfish and that’s just the ones I can remember! Some swim in mass schools, while others swim as lone rangers. The open sandy areas between the rocks often attract resting eagle rays whilst crayfish nestle and forage in the reef cracks and crevices.
There is a submerged reef finger that heads straight out from the shore which you can follow down to around 25m where it meets the main reef pinnacle. You can easily circle the reef pinnacle over the course a dive. The topography ranges from shear walls to kelp covered rocky steps leveling out onto a sandy bottom around the base of the pinnacle. There is plenty to see hiding amongst the boulders and kelp and you wont be short on fishy company.
White reef is located in Deep Water cove where the Canterbury shipwreck is impressively resting but this gem of a dive site is one that is not to be missed.
