Northland Taupiri Bay
DESCRIPTION
This site is often used when putting advanced open water students through their paces.
Taupiri Bay has a large soft sandy bottom (perfect for practicing navigation and search patterns) with a reef that wraps around from the right providing the bay with plenty of shelter and points of interest during night dives.
Depending on the tide, a short surface swim or descent down the gentle slope will take you out to the reef and down to 6-8m.
The soft sandy area is home to stingrays and flatfish, while smaller marine species stay close to the rocky outcrops and reef. Amongst the kelp you can see Red Moki, Parore, Goatfish and juvenile Snapper. At night the shallows are full of piper fish and hermit crabs and if you take your time and look carefully you can see squid and the occasional octopus.
This is a an easy site to navigate and its gentle sloping, sheltered entry makes it accessible to all levels of divers.
