Plan to arrive at the Dive Tutukaka Dive Centre between 8:00am and 8.15am in the morning. Dive Tutukaka are easy to find - look for the giant yellow scuba cylinder to the left of Schnappa Rock Café. You will need to check in with the staff at the dive centre where you will show your certification card, fill in the required paperwork and be informed which vessel in the Dive Tutukaka fleet you are on for the day. Once you have loaded your equipment onto the correct vessel (they have 5) you will be given an informative boat briefing before departing for the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve.

All of the vessels have a main dry cabin for shelter and gear storage, onboard toilets and hot rinse areas on the dive deck. There is water, hot drinks and soup available on board, but lunch is not provided. You can pre-order a yummy packed lunch for $15 - just let us know when you book.

Once at the Poor Knights, the staff will find the best dive spot, depending on the swell, wind direction, experience and personal preference of the divers on board. A thorough briefing of the site and the marine life is always given before you get into the water, whether you're diving, snorkeling or kayaking. The crew will come round and have a chat to you before you get to the dive site to sort out who needs a guide, a  buddy or just a darn good site briefing.

Between your 2 dives there is a surface interval of about 1.5 hours, plenty of time for lunch, relaxing, sight seeing and reminiscing on your dive. A second site will be chosen for the afternoon dive and a second thorough site briefing will be given. When everyone is topside and counted back on board, the gear is stowed and the boat heads back arriving at the Tutukaka Marina between 3.30 and 4.30pm.

New Zealand is temperate water diving and you must have dived within the last 12 months – contact us if you need a refresher. All divers must dive within their certification limits.

What you need to take:

  • Full set of scuba gear - BCD, Regs, Dive Computer, Weight system, Exposure suit, Mask, Fins, Boots
  • 2 tanks
