First Look: The New Fourth Element Arctic X
Global Dives Andrew was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at the new Arctic X range from Fourth Element, which we are pleased to say has finally been launched, and is now available.
A Step Forward from the Classic Arctic
Arctic X isn't just a refresh of the much-loved Arctic. It's been re-engineered using technology from Fourth Element's higher-end ranges. It draws directly from the X-Core range, and borrows design thinking from the top-of-the-line Halo Ar, bringing features and performance that previously sat at a much higher price point.
Positioned Exactly Where It Needs to Be
Arctic X sits neatly between the lightweight Xerotherm base layer and the maximum-performance Halo AR. More thermal protection than the former, less bulk than the latter. For New Zealand conditions, where flexibility matters more than extremes, it's a practical option across a huge range of diving.
Smarter Materials
The outer fabric is now water-repellent; less water absorption during kitting up means reduced evaporative cooling on the surface and more consistent warmth between dives. Combined with the X-Core-derived inner materials, the focus is clearly on staying warm without holding moisture.
Designed for Movement
The ergonomic pre-bent leg design is one of the standout changes. It's shaped to match how divers actually move. It's one of those features you don't fully appreciate until you use it. This principal was introduced in the Argonaut 3.0 drysuit, and has been extremely well received.
Practical Upgrades
Rounding it out: a new pocket design, improved fit and panel layout, and a more refined balance between insulation and flexibility. Nothing gimmicky - just thoughtful updates that make the suit easier to live with.

Final Thoughts
Arctic X gets the balance right. It's not trying to be the warmest suit in the range - it's aiming to be the one you reach for most often, whether that's recreational drysuit diving, technical configurations, or multi-dive days where moisture management matters.
For a lot of divers, this could become the new default undersuit - not because it does one thing exceptionally, but because it does everything well. We'll be getting it in-store at Global Dive soon and putting it through its paces in local conditions.
