Global Dive Newsletter - August 2008

Welcome to the August edition of your dive club's newsletter.

We'll I've just got back from Australia. Thought I might escape to the "sunburnt country" for a bit of sunshine and warmth. But alas - we were there for a week and it was cold and wet the whole time.

It just made me homesick!!!

Dive club

As always the last Monday evening of every month at Global Dive shop here in Westhaven from 6pm onwards.

Dive club meetings are strictly social events - just a BBQ and a few drinks, and chance to chat to some fellow divers looking for dive buddies (or dive buddies with boats). Plus of course there's the monthly guest speaker to inspire you on to great things diving.

This month's dive club meeting is Monday 25 August.

This month's guest speakers

Our guest speaker this month is our own Brent Palmer. For those of you that don't know Brent he's a former SAS medic and passionate deep technical diver. His company, Yacht Lifeline, specialises in training boat crews how to deal with emergencies, on everything from weekend warrior boats through to super yachts. Their motto says it all - "Saving Lives at Sea". He's a man in demand and his training schedule regularly takes him overseas.

Brent will be presenting on the ''Life line to death" and how to break this chain by the intervention of basic life saving strategies.

This is a great opportunity to gain some very valuable knowledge. Don't miss this opportunity.

Cool photo eh! Don't worry - no animals were harmed in the making of this photo!

Project Aware International Cleanup Day - Saturday 20 September

Project AwareEvery year, Project AWARE helps organise hundreds of thousands of volunteers from all over the world to reverse the damage done to our oceans by debris and litter. This year, Global Dive is getting involved, and we need your help! We want to keep our oceans clean for generations to come, not just for the enjoyment of others, but also because our world is dependent on the health of the delicate marine ecosystem.

We can all do our part every day by using less, recycling more, and disposing of our rubbish responsibly. What’s more, on 20 September we can raise awareness and get others involved as well! Going above and beyond our normal routine for a few hours can help make a world of change. Mission Bay is a popular beachfront area and a great place to show others what a difference we can make. Divers, snorkelers, beachgoers, water lovers – any and all volunteers are welcome!

Project AWARE is passionate about keeping our beaches and oceans clean; last year, a total of 3,175,000 kg of rubbish were removed and data was collected and entered into Project AWARE’s database.

Please join us at 10am-1pm on 20 September at Mission Bay, where we will organise our team to collect debris and send our data to Project AWARE, so they can record our results and put them into the international database. We will also be having a free BBQ for volunteers, so bring your appetite too! If you can make it please let us know.
