Global Dive Newsletter - June 2008

Welcome to the June edition of your dive club's newsletter.

Diving takes us away from the hustle and bustle of busy life and gives us something to look forward to. And we are fortunate in New Zealand to have some amazing diving experiences.

Don't ever take it for granted. If you ever feel complacent about New Zealand diving, just remember that things could be much, much worse. Take for example the "fortunate" divers at Vobster Quay (UK) - they've just got some new concrete pipes to explore in their quarry. Don't believe me? Have a look for yourself - http://www.vobsterquay.co.uk/#concretepipes

Dive club meeting

As always the last Monday evening of every month at Global Dive shop here in Westhaven from 6pm onwards.

Dive club meetings are strictly social events - just a BBQ and a few drinks, and chance to chat to some fellow divers looking for dive buddies (or dive buddies with boats). Plus of course there's the monthly guest speaker to inspire you on to great things diving.

This month's dive club meeting is Monday 30 June.

This month's guest speaker

Johan Olivier a South African hyperbaric technician from hyperbaric health NZ will be giving 2 half hour presentations.

1) Having worked with the worlds deepest diver, Johan will give a presentation on Nuno Gomez who holds the Guinness world records on the Deepest Sea Dive to 318m and deepest Cave dive to 282m --- this presentation will include a 7 minute video clip, Technical information about these world record dives and how the body manages to handle the stress of such a dive.

2) Decompression Illness and Hyperbaric Chambers – The medical use of Hyperbaric Chambers when they are not treating divers and a glimpse into what this treatment could involve.

New Bare drysuits available for rental

Global is proud to announce that we now have a range of Bare Tri-Laminate Drysuits and Forth Element under-garments in our rental department for you to use. We're not 100% sure, but we think we are the only dive club in New Zealand that actually owns our own drysuits for hire.

Anyway, if you have always wanted to dive in a drysuit, then now is your chance. This is also the perfect way to "try before you buy", and we're pretty confident that once you've tried dry you'll never go back. Plus, if you buy a drysuit from us after having rented we'll even deduct the rental costs off the cost of your new suit (for rentals within 4 weeks of purchase).

If you want to try a suit in the pool then our regular Tuesday evenings at the Newmarket pool are a great chance to do so.

Don’t feel experienced enough? We have on hand experienced Divemasters s who will gladly buddy up and dive with you.

We will also be running a PADI Advanced Open Water course on this trip. Most importantly you learn new skills which will enhance your diving and increase your awareness at depth.

All meals and accommodation are included in the price and yes we will be staying the night on the ocean, tucked away in one of many of the sheltered areas the Poor Knights has to offer in a luxury 53-foot catamaran called Pacific Hideaway.

Poor Knights experienced divers weekend 5-6 July

We will be chartering MV Bright Arrow to take experienced divers out to explore the depths of the Poor Knights. The vessel will be leaving 1 hour early each morning to give us the ability to offer 2 hour dive run times twice a day. Divers must dive within the scope of their certification. Decompression and Rebreather divers welcomed. We have the ability to pump Nitrox cylinders and boost Oxygen cylinders up at Tutukaka between diving days, but you will need to pre book this service so we know how much gas to carry (normal costing apply).

Accommodation can be sorted with the Oceans Villa 'Flash Packers' deal, for $30 per night. Divers will need to supply own lunch.

Trip report - Skirts in scuba by Claire Byrne

I moved to Auckland from England in February, and I knew that one of the first things I wanted to do in NZ was learn to dive. I started my PADI course straight away, and after a few hiccups (quite literally – for some reason I got really violent hiccups during every pool session!) I passed in May. The Poor Knights Skirts In Scuba day was my first non-training dive – it was an amazing experience for someone so new to diving!

I was really nervous before we left, especially when I saw how experienced everyone else was – I was worried I’d forget what to do and thought I might struggle to keep up in the water. I needn’t have worried – Noel and Jo from Yukon Dive and Fishing Charters were really nice and good fun, and it was a great bunch of people.

Our first dive was at Hideaway Bay. Anna and Jo gave me a hand with my gear (including my brand new Global Dive wetsuit), then Anna took me and another Skirt In Scuba down to 18m. I couldn’t believe how much there was to see even just at the surface – the water was so clear! On the way down it was a bit of a sensory overload – there was so much to take in! Straight away we saw male Sandager’s wrasse, red Diadema sea urchins and moray eels. The fish seemed quite happy for us to be there so we got pretty close. I couldn’t wait to write it all in my log book!

Jo had prepared an amazing spread for lunch so we ate that with the rest of the group and exchanged stories. I was glad to find that I’d been able to see a lot of the same things as the more experienced divers.

On our second dive at Jans Tunnel, Anna took a camera down and got a few snaps of the nudibranchs and of me and Alexandria underwater. I had my first experience of swimming in a surge, and managed to spot a few scorpionfish hiding in the rocks too.

I was pretty tired by the time we got back to the boat but felt very satisfied – I’d had such a great day! I think my favourites were the clown nudibranch – I’d never seen anything like them before. I also really liked watching the blue-eyed triplefins darting about and looking like they were bouncing off the walls! I made a few new friends and new diving buddies, and saw things I’d never have been able to back home. Noel and Jo and everyone at Global Dive were so helpful, and I can’t wait to go diving again! I’m just worried that, having been to one of the best dive sites in the world, I might never match it...!
